Empowering Women and Building Futures: The Tchukudu Women’s Training Centre in Goma

In the heart of Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, the Tchukudu Women’s Training Centre (TWTC)stands as a beacon of hope, empowerment, and resilience. For many women who have fled their villages due to conflict, TWTC offers not just a space for learning but a sanctuary to rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose.

Transforming Lives Through Skills and Community

At TWTC, women embark on a 2-3 year transformative journey where they acquire essential skills, including sewing, basket weaving, and tie-dye artistry. With these tools, many graduates launch small businesses or join cooperative ventures, creating sustainable incomes for themselves and their families.

Since its opening in May 2014, TWTC has celebrated numerous milestones:

• 65 women have graduated with seamstress skills, many establishing successful sewing businesses.

• 10 women have mastered the art of basket weaving.

• Graduates also benefit from microfinance training, empowering them to manage their businesses effectively.

The 6th cohort of women is now in their second year of training, actively working towards independence and economic stability.

Support That Changes Lives

TWTC also provides critical support to women and children living with HIV, many of whom have experienced sexual violence. Sponsoring a woman’s training costs just $50-100 CAD/month or $600-1200 CAD/year, providing her with education, food, and water. A two-year commitment ensures these women can thrive and, in turn, uplift their families and communities.

Building a Sustainable Future

TWTC continually seeks new opportunities to ensure graduates have sustainable income. The centre operates a Days for Girls Reusable Sanitary Pad business, creating income while addressing menstrual health needs. An Advisory Committee is actively planning further initiatives to support graduates’ long-term success.
