Proposal for Shirati KMT Hospital Operating Room Renovation
1. Executive Summary
Shirati KMT Hospital, situated on the shores of Lake Victoria in Tanzania, has been a cornerstone of healthcare for the Rorya District’s approximately 400,000 residents since its establishment in 1934. Over the years, the hospital has undergone significant improvements, notably through collaborations with organizations like the Canada-Africa Community Health Alliance (CACHA). To continue enhancing patient care, we propose a comprehensive renovation of the hospital’s 50-year-old operating room (OR) to meet modern medical standards and accommodate the increasing number of critical surgeries.
2. Background
Shirati KMT Hospital offers a wide range of services, including outpatient and inpatient care, surgery, maternity, pediatrics, and specialized clinics such as the Care and Treatment Centre for HIV/AIDS. Despite its extensive services, the hospital faces challenges due to outdated infrastructure, particularly in the operating room, which has not seen significant upgrades in five decades. Modernizing this facility is crucial to ensure safe and efficient surgical procedures.
3. Objectives
• Primary Objective: Renovate the existing operating room to enhance surgical capacity and patient safety.
• Specific Goals:
• Install new surgical lights to improve visibility during procedures.
• Provide instrument cabinets for organized and sterile storage.
• Apply fresh paint to walls and ceilings with antimicrobial coatings.
• Replace existing flooring with sanitary, easy-to-clean materials.
4. Project Justification
The current state of the operating room poses risks to both patients and medical staff due to inadequate lighting, outdated equipment storage, deteriorating surfaces, and non-compliant flooring. Upgrading these elements will:
• Reduce the risk of surgical site infections.
• Enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of surgical procedures.
• Attract and retain skilled healthcare professionals.
• Increase the hospital’s capacity to serve the community’s growing healthcare needs.
5. Budget Estimate
The total estimated cost for the operating room renovation is $30,000, allocated as follows:
• Surgical Lights: $10,000
• Instrument Cabinets: $5,000
• Painting (Antimicrobial Coating): $5,000
• Sanitary Flooring: $7,000
• Contingency Fund: $3,000
6. Implementation Plan
• Phase 1: Planning and Procurement (Month 1)
• Finalize renovation plans and specifications.
• Source and order necessary equipment and materials.
• Phase 2: Renovation (Months 2-3)
• Temporarily relocate surgical services to an alternative area.
• Execute demolition of outdated fixtures and prepare the site.
• Install new surgical lights, cabinets, and flooring.
• Apply antimicrobial paint to walls and ceilings.
• Phase 3: Inspection and Training (Month 4)
• Conduct thorough inspections to ensure compliance with medical standards.
• Train surgical staff on the use of new equipment and protocols.
• Phase 4: Project Completion (Month 5)
• Resume surgical operations in the renovated OR.
• Evaluate project outcomes and document lessons learned.
7. Sustainability and Maintenance
To ensure the longevity of the renovated operating room:
• Regular Maintenance: Implement a maintenance schedule for equipment and facilities.
• Staff Training: Provide ongoing training for staff on best practices in OR maintenance and infection control.
• Local Partnerships: Engage with local suppliers for timely replacement of consumables and equipment servicing.
8. Monitoring and Evaluation
The project’s success will be measured through:
• Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
• Reduction in surgical site infections by 30% within six months post-renovation.
• Increase in the number of surgeries performed by 20% within a year.
• Improved staff satisfaction and retention rates.
• Evaluation Methods:
• Regular audits of surgical outcomes and infection rates.
• Surveys and feedback from medical staff and patients.
• Financial reports to assess budget adherence and cost-effectiveness.
9. Conclusion
Renovating the operating room at Shirati KMT Hospital is a vital step toward providing high-quality surgical care to the Rorya District’s population. This project aligns with the hospital’s mission to deliver comprehensive healthcare services and reflects a commitment to continuous improvement. We seek support from donors and partners to achieve this goal and make a lasting impact on community health.
