Objective: To increase access to education and healthcare for the Ukerewe Island population.
Background: Members of the community on Ukerewe Island first approached CACHA in 2007. An initial visit was undertaken in October of 2008 to assess the feasibility of expanding CACHA’s outreach work to the island. Meetings were held with prospective partners and plans were made for a first caravan in January/February of 2009. That caravan was held successfully and plans were made for a second caravan in October of 2009. As a result of the success of the second caravan, CACHA committed itself to a cycle of two caravans per year for the Ukerewe and Ukara islands, in the eastern part of Lake Victoria.
Since 2011, CACHA has assisted approximately 22, 903 patients, and dispensed approximately 88, 870 prescriptions.
NDH and the surrounding community provide a team of medical and non-medical personnel to work alongside the Canadian volunteer health professionals in 2-way expertise and knowledge-sharing partnership. Consultations, treatments and prescription medications (including reading glasses) are provided free of charge to the patients, the costs being borne by CACHA and NDH.
Health services and resources are exceedingly inadequate and access to medical care is limited as farmers and fishers are living in extreme poverty, often eating only 1 meal per day. We bring a team of 20+ clinicians, pharmacists, and logisticians to work alongside our Tanzanian partners to offer medical outreach to 300-500+ people per day.
Traveling to Ukerewe Island and working with our local partners provides you with a unique experience as Ukerewe is a remote and isolated community in the heart of the African continent.
We work closely with our local partners, in a relationship built on trust and respect, to offer services to those in dire need. Be prepared to experience life in Tanzania and to offer your skills and compassion to a people who will welcome you with open arms.
Ukerewe caravan is popular with all volunteers, and you are encouraged to sign on early to ensure your place on the team.
