The Tchukudu Women’s Training Centre (TWTC)

Location: Goma, The Democratic Republic of the Congo

Located in the city of Goma, the TWTC is a place for women fleeing the ongoing conflict in their villages to develop the skills needed to support themselves and their families in the city.

The TWTC offers the women a 1-2 year program to train in a new skill and begin a solo or cooperative business.

Current Work

Our first-class graduated in June 2016, and to date, we have graduated a total of 57 women in seamstress training who have gone on to start up sewing cooperatives to generate income to feed their families and educate their children. Ten women have learned basket weaving skills and a total of 15 women (1 woman from each cooperative business) have gone on to microfinance training.

The cost to support a woman is $50 CDN/month or $600 CDN/year with a two-year commitment.

Next Steps

While we continue to train women in income-generating skills, we are opening a health care clinic to treat the needs of the local population. Health care can be very costly in DRCongo and we want to provide free health care or health care at a reasonable cost so people can live healthy, safe lives.
