When Rick began to produce art in 1991, his intention was simply to use the process of creativity as a tool and outlet to express his thoughts and feelings. He was never without a sketchbook in hand drawing scenes, capturing a glimpse of the moment, exploring thoughts and ideas, and all the while establishing a foundation of work that would evolve into and support a very diverse body of work. His love for exploration led him to work on several bodies of work concurrently and as a result his portfolio developed over time with works that spanned many techniques, styles and subject matter. He began to enter competitions and applied to artist-run organizations with much success. Rick was accepted into the Federation of Canadian Artists as an Active Member in 2015. Today he continues to produce works based on his life experiences and he continues to sell his paintings through his website, through studio tour exhibitions and privately.
In 2007/2008 Rick volunteered at Kilema Hospital in Tanzania with CACHA for 8 months where he helped to set up the Orphan and Vulnerable Children’s Program. Aside from the important main activities of completing field visits to each of the children’s’ villages to determine their needs; organizing clothing and food distribution and addressing schooling needs, Rick also focused on developing an art and activities program. With funding provided by the Snowy Owl Foundation, Rick organized and ran a project designed to allow the children to come together in a safe and supportive environment. Every Saturday the children were invited to the Activity Centre at the Hospital to enjoy fun team building activities, develop supportive friendships and to create art that would fill the walls of the medical clinic and activity centre built specifically for the children of the program and their families. Rick’s main goal for the program was to let the children develop ownership of their Activity Centre and Medical clinic by proudly displaying their own art on the walls.
Rick’s work can be viewed on his website at www.rickmadore.com.
