Tegemeo: Kilema Orphans and Vulnerable Children Support Programme

HIV/AIDS has left an estimated 2 million Tanzanian children orphaned. Countless other children find themselves vulnerable, caring for one or both of their chronically ill parents and often missing out on what they need for survival, growth and development. In response to this situation, CACHA and Kilema District Hospital have implemented the Tegemeo Kilema Orphans and Vulnerable Children Support Programme, with Tegemeo being the Swahili word for support. There are over 800 OVCs living in the area serviced by Kilema District Hospital, children living with grandparents, extended family or in child headed households with no adult care. Few possess the skills or capital to secure many basic necessities and their access to health care and education is often severely limited. Beyond the lack of basic necessities, these children are also affected by the psychological trauma of losing one or both parents to AIDS.

Building on our established partnership with Kilema District Hospital, CACHA strives to meet the needs of the most vulnerable children in the Kilema area in the following ways:

  • Providing of basic necessities such as food, clothing, medical care and proper shelter;

  • Ensuring that orphans and vulnerable children receive education through provision of school fees, school uniforms and school lunches;

  • Meeting the social and emotional needs of the children through recreational activities and psychosocial support; and

  • Utilizing tracking systems to ensure monitoring of support, transparency and appropriate distribution of resources among children according to their different levels of need.

We want these children not only to survive the impact of HIV/AIDS but also to become productive and supportive members of their community. We will build upon existing resources, the skills and knowledge of our partners at Kilema District Hospital, and organizations already active in the community to achieve our objectives and ensure that these children have a brighter future. We aim to make your donation as effective as possible through a programme that is sustainable and efficient, striving to empower the local community to build these brighter futures for years to come. $300 will support one child for one year, equivalent to $25 per month.
