Missions

WHAT IS A MEDICAL MISSION?

The Canada-Africa Community Health Alliance has been sending volunteers on 2-3 week medical missions since 2002. Medical Missions serve to provide rural and isolated African communities with life-saving medical care.

Want to get involved?

A medical mission typically consists of a team of approximately 20-25 CACHA volunteers along with 25 local staff, who provide free or subsidized health services to underserviced rural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The CACHA volunteers consist of pharmacists, surgeons, nurses, physicians and logisticians (non-medical volunteers). A mission lead is appointed by CACHA to organize the preparation for the mission and lead volunteers on the ground.

Health services offered include: General medicine consults, OB/GYN consults, minor surgery, dentistry, ophthalmology, surgical referrals and onsite HIV testing and referrals.   Between 400 and 600 patients are seen per clinic day with an average of 4-5 prescriptions per person.

Mission Participants are active CACHA members and engage in necessary fundraising efforts to cover the full cost of the mission.  To learn more, please contact missions@cacha.ca.
